Park, Sleep and Fly at Buffalo Airport

Park, sleep and fly is the reason many people book an airport hotel in Buffalo at all: drive in the evening, sleep across the street from the terminal, leave the car at the hotel and ride the shuttle in the morning. A large share of those drivers come from Southern Ontario, where Buffalo fares undercut Toronto Pearson. This guide explains how the packages work here and when the airport’s own lots are the better deal.

How the packages work

A park-and-fly package is a room rate that includes parking for the length of your trip, typically 7 to 14 days, plus the shuttle both ways. You register the car at check-in, book your morning shuttle time at the same desk, and call the hotel from the terminal when you land to be collected. Rates are per room, so a family in one room pays the same as a solo traveller.

Packages are not usually shown on the big booking sites. Book the room, then phone or email the hotel to add parking, or ask at check-in; the extended-parking charge without a package is small at some hotels and not offered at others.

What the airport charges

Buffalo Niagara Airport’s own parking is cheap by big-city standards, which is the number a hotel package has to beat:

  • Economy lot (blue signs): $12 a day, free shuttle
  • Long Term lot (orange signs): $14 a day, free shuttle
  • Preferred lot (green signs): $17 a day, walkable
  • Daily/Hourly garage (red signs): $5.40 an hour, $30 a day, covered and adjacent to the terminal; a reserved space costs $3 more per day

All rates carry 8.75 percent sales tax. Lot shuttles run every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day. A free cell phone lot on Buell Avenue is for pickups only.

When the hotel wins

Take a seven-day trip. The Economy lot costs about $91 with tax and you still drive to the airport on the morning of the flight. A hotel package for the same week costs the room rate plus a modest parking charge, and buys you the night before across the street, breakfast at three of the hotels, and a shuttle timed to your flight rather than a 05:00 drive down the Thruway. If you live more than an hour away, or you are crossing the border from Ontario, the hotel usually wins on stress and often on money once fuel and an early start are counted. For a two-day trip from the Buffalo suburbs, the Economy lot wins.

Morning routine

Six of the seven shuttles run around the clock; Aloft does not publish hours. Buffalo is a small terminal and an hour before a domestic departure is normal if you have no bag to check.
